Every now and then in my moments of isolation and wellagardi I chance upon a page on Facebook.I have close to about 660 people on my Facebook. No, they aren’t all random strangers! In fact, barring some 40 odd people most are people I’ve known and/or met at some point in my life or through acquaintances. I’m not one of those who adds people to increase my friend list or to increase the number of “likes” on my pictures and statuses...There are quite a lot of people I’ve heard of who do this! They’ll add whoever will send them a request to increase their “popularity status!”But, this isn’t what my blog entry is about!
As I write today I had been thinking of this since quite sometime-observing, analysing & understanding the trends on various peoples' pages! Every page on Facebook tells a story sometimes and untold story-told like nobody else’s, sometimes half told stories-leaving one to imagine and be curious about the rest of it! And some other times deceiving,deceptive stories-sometimes to garner sympathy, sometimes to pull up their own self esteem!
For some people networking sites are parallel realities which either they keep well guarded(limited profiles/restricted profiles by making lists where certain people have more access to your statuses read feelings,pictures & other information than most others!) or on a display as if they were artefacts in a museum!
Recently there was a war of words between an ex colleague and my friend,where the former called her immature for deleting him from her list following an argument and fallout! Even though nobody is answerable to why they don’t have certain people on their list, her reason was simple when probed on the same-if somebody has a problem with her and dislikes her and the feeling has become mutual-then why just keep them on your list and give them access to what’s happening in your life through pictures and statuses etc.
The sensible ones would understand the same, while the rest could go on whining about the entire episode, but, the truth remains intact-it’s your personal choice who you want to divulge your life details to!
There are people I have on my list who are frustrated in life but, have a very happy face on the networking site-displaying all party pictures and the likes, depicting how happy they are in life! Then there are some who are lashing out their wrath in public just as an outlet to vent out anger/frustration etc. And then we have who we call the spectators- commenting and liking and praising or discussing whatever they come across!
Parallel reality is here to stay-we earlier had letters and pen friends, then there were emails, then Orkut and Hi5 type of sites & now there is Facebook which has taken the entire world by storm! Reinventing itself time and again so that people stay connected in more interesting ways than ever,devicing new ways for people to share their parallel realities in an unreal world!
